Sogama's project of regional interest is the first to be definitively approved in Galicia.
Cerceda, A Coruña (Spain).
The Xunta de Galicia has given final approval to the Project of Regional Interest (PIA), drawn up by Antea Group Spain, which will enable the expansion and improvement of the facilities at Sogama's waste treatment plant in Cerceda, A Coruña.
This specific planning instrument will facilitate and speed up the expansion and improvement of the facilities in the future, enabling Sogama to expand its activity and build new buildings on the land available to it without being subject to the urban planning constraints of the municipal subsidiary regulations to which it was subject. Likewise, it will allow to adapt the parameters of buildability and heights to its real needs.
The request for the declaration of the Cerceda environmental complex as a project of regional interest is based on the basic and essential nature of the public service provided by Sogama throughout Galicia through the management and treatment of urban waste produced by the 295 municipalities belonging to its system. This will help Sogama to advance towards the implementation of the circular economy in Galicia and to meet the European objectives for municipal waste management on time.
The environmental complex is responsible for the management and treatment of waste generated by 295 of Galicia's 313 municipalities, home to 2.2 million inhabitants. Every day, Sogama receives and treats more than two million kilos of waste, and in the summer months the daily volume has exceeded 3.5 million kilos. The treatment includes the selection of materials for recycling.
Sogama's project of regional interest, drawn up by Antea Group Spain, is the first to be definitively approved in Galicia since the creation of this figure by law in 2021.
The proposed area of action has a total surface area of 805,431 square meters and is made up of 18 plots, including the one corresponding to the current buildings of the complex, which occupy 50,000 square meters.
