Lugo (Spain).
On 9 September, ADIF (Spanish Railway Infrastructure Administrator) accepted the completed construction works for the new Lugo Intermodal Station, where Antea Group Spain, in a consortium with Bac Engineering Consultancy Group, carried out consultancy and technical assistance services for the execution of the works.
The supervision of the works carried out by Antea Group Spain included the construction of a new passenger terminal with a new underpass between platforms, a new pedestrian underpass connecting the city on both sides of the railway infrastructure, a new urban square, and the development and enhancement of the surroundings of the new station and the new city underpass, as well as the adaptation of the existing shelters to the station’s future needs.
The new passenger terminal has a gross floor area of over 3.600 m2 and a net floor area of almost 2.300 m2. Its ground floor houses the passenger concourse leading to the boarding access control area and, at the opposite end to the passenger boarding area, the zone set aside for a café and commercial premises or service facilities. The remainder of the ground floor and the first floor are occupied by facilities for the public, toilets, and spaces dedicated to station management and rail traffic control, as well as administrative offices, a storeroom and/or maintenance facilities for the station itself. The spaces reserved for technical installations will be located in the basement.
The new Lugo railway station is situated in the vicinity of the old railway station, on the edge of an established part of the city; consequently, all aspects of the project were closely linked to the urban development of the area and addressed the need to improve the city’s transport network. Consequently, its new public square will serve as a link between the railway and bus stations, the underground car park serving both, and the underpass connecting to the city, whilst also providing continuity to Lugo’s urban fabric. The entire design is focused on providing a new, iconic urban space for the city of Lugo – a ‘place to linger’ for the use and enjoyment not only of travellers, but also for the leisure of Lugo’s residents.
