Antea Group, Sener and KPMG, awarded the contract for the drafting of the studies for the development of a railway strategy for Mexico, financed by the European Union.
Mexico City (Mexico).
The European Union (EU) and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) of the Government of Mexico signed a letter of intent, in order to contribute to the generation of a long-term public policy for the development of the Mexican Railway System, to make it an efficient and sustainable transport alternative.
For the development of such policies, the European Union, through the European Commission, put out to bid a consulting contract for the definition of a “Strategy for Sociocultural, Ecological and Economic Development Oriented to Railway Transport in Mexico”, with the purpose of developing an integral and strategic planning that will be a guide for the sectorial programs of transport, urban and regional development and the actions against climate change in charge of the federal institutions of the country.
The contract was awarded in December 2023 to the international consortium formed by Antea Group, Sener and KPMG, with an execution term of 24 months.
The project seeks to position the Mexican Railway System as a leading inter- and multimodal transport mode in the country, for cargo, passengers and mixed transport, promoting the railway system oriented to the public good through its optimization, improvement, development, operation and maintenance, so that the strategic plan establishes a methodology for the design and implementation of passenger rail transport projects that are safe and environmentally friendly.
The contract includes the execution of pre-investment studies for two pilot projects that will develop the new strategy designed. The first of these is the Naucalpan de Juarez light rail project in the State of Mexico, and during the course of the work the scope of the second pilot project, to be developed in another medium-sized Mexican city, will be defined.
The Naucalpan Light Train project contemplates the rehabilitation of the “N” railway line, currently out of operation or underutilized, to provide an efficient rail transportation system between Naucalpan and the Buenavista station in Mexico City, the terminus of the Mexico City Suburban Train. The project is approximately 14 km long and runs through the municipality of Naucalpan de Juárez (State of Mexico) and three Mexico City municipalities: Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo, with several interchange points with the subway system. The pre-investment studies for both pilot projects will be developed in line with the new strategy, considering their environmental, social and economic/financial value.
This contract consolidates Antea Group 's growth as a participant in strategic projects for the transition to sustainable mobility, including interventions in the transportation systems of metropolitan areas of the magnitude of Mexico City, Bogota or Panama City.
